Meon Junior School have been crowned champions of the annual Portsmouth Literature Quiz hosted by the city’s library service.

In February, 12 Year 6 children attended the popular citywide event at the Mountbatten Centre in Hilsea to compete against other schools.

The school submitted three teams of four children with each team based at a different table in a room filled with young brainy quiz enthusiasts from other schools.

Meon Junior made a good start and were joint winners of the first round but lost on the tie break question. There were several rounds which included general knowledge, picture rounds, and questions about books and their authors which everyone studied in advance.

After their day of questions, the 3rd, 2nd and 1st place winners were announced with Team A for Meon Junior School taking the top spot. They were presented with a trophy and book vouchers to spend at the Hayling Bookshop Stall.

Christine Turner, Head of School, praised all three Meon teams for their brilliant performance. She said: “I’m incredibly proud that we had three team representing Meon in this citywide competition and it’s fantastic they managed to come away with the top prize too.

“Across Meon Infant, Meon Junior, and Moorings Way Infant school we strive to encourage our children to be their best selves and this literature quiz is an example of exactly that. Whatever position our teams came in the quiz, they did their best so make our whole school community proud.”

At one point during the day, children were able to purchase a variety of different books which were signed by the author. The books that the teams read in advance were Melt by Ellie Fountain, Can You Fell the Noise? by Stewart Foster, The Boy who Flew by Fleur Hitchcock and Swarm Rising by Steve Cole and Tim Peake.
