The Computing Curriculum is aimed at teaching children how a computer works rather than just learning how to use applications that run on it.

The Computing Curriculum is split into three core strands:

  • Computer Science
  • Information Technology
  • Digital Literacy

Computer Science

Children will learn to program in a variety of languages including: Logo, Scratch, Kodu, Python, HTML/CSS and EV3 Lego programming.  The children also learn about binary and how the binary number system works.  This year we are going to be working with micro:bits too!

In Year 6, a group of G&T children have ben selected to enter the First Lego League Challenge of 2017 – 2018.  Meon Junior School has done exceptionally well and for the last two years were the winners of the Champions Award at the Regional Competition held at Portsmouth University.



Information Technology

As part of their learning, children take a computer apart.  They see what is inside a computer and what each component does.  They learn how the internet works and how a search engine ranks results. They follow what happens to a message as it is sent across the internet.  They also learn how images are stored on a computer.

Digital Literacy

On entering the school in Year 3, every child has their own Google Account. This can be accessed from any computer device which has an internet connection. The Year 3 children this year login with their username e.g. Alice Smith in Year 3 would login as:

The Year 3 passwords are:


where *** stands for their own individual password.

This means that every child can access and continue to work on anything done in Google Apps in class during the school day.

During their time at Meon Junior School, children will learn how to use the following Google Applications: Google Docs, Drive, Mail, Sites, Slides, Sheets, Forms and Google Drawings.

Through sharing their work in Google Applications and sending emails children learn how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.  They learn to recognise acceptable and unacceptable behaviour online and identify a range of ways to report any concerns which they may have.
