Learning in PSHE

All the teaching staff at Meon Junior School are working with Meon Infant and Moorings Way Infant School colleagues to identify how our curriculum will meet the needs of our children across the three schools.

We believe it is important to plan the learning journey of the children from Year R to Year 6. Even though we are a Junior School, this does not stop us using what the children have already learnt before they leave Infant School. This is vitally important. As three schools, we have worked together to produce a joint intention of what we want the children to learn. 

By the end of Year 2

By the time our children leave our school in Year 2, they will have learnt how to understand themselves and the people around them.  They will know how to keep themselves healthy and how to be a good friend. They will have a developing knowledge of the British Values to help them to find their place in the community and in the wider world.

 

By the end of Year 6

By the time our children leave our school in Year 6, they will have learnt how to understand themselves and the impact they have on the people around them. Pupils will be able to express themselves and be able to share their views and opinions with others.  They will know how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy and be able to establish healthy relationships with peers and adults.  PSHE will give them a secure knowledge of our British Values ensuring that they  become good citizens in our community and the world.

Jigsaw

At Meon Junior School we follow a scheme of work called Jigsaw. There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw that are designed to progress in sequence from the start of each academic year:

Term 1: Being Me in My World
Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
Term 3: Dreams and Goals
Term 4: Healthy Me
Term 5: Relationships
Term 6: Changing Me

Each Puzzle has six Pieces (lessons) and each piece has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills development. The whole school works on the same Puzzle at the same time, meaning that each Puzzle can be launched with a whole-school assembly and learning can be celebrated by the whole school in a meaningful way.

Jigsaw provides a comprehensive PSHE Programme which covers all the requirements of the government guidance and outcomes, and more. The Relationships and Healthy Me Puzzles (units) cover most of the aspects in the guidance but these are enhanced, revisited and foundations built throughout the Jigsaw Programme. Jigsaw’s philosophy starts by building positive self-image, a sense of identity and a healthy relationship with self, and from that starting point helps children grow healthy relationships with others. Health Education in Jigsaw embraces not only physical health but has a strong focus on mental health and  emotional literacy throughout, and empowers children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and know how to manage and regulate these (e.g.using Calm Me (mindfulness techniques).

Thank you to all those who contributed to our RSE parental consultation. We have now finalised our RSE policy based on the new national requirements.

 From September 2020, all primary schools are required by the government to teach Relationships and Health Education.

Relationships Education is designed to help children to have positive and safe relationships with family, friends and online.

Health Education will help children to make good decisions about their health and wellbeing and enable them to know how to seek support if any health issues arise for themselves or others.

Appendix 1 of our RSE policy below shows how we are allocating our PSHE/RSE curriculum across years 3 to 6. In the Changing Me unit, you will see different highlighted topics. These indicate which topics are from the statutory Science and PSHE/RSE curriculum and which are non-statutory. There is a form for parents or guardians to complete if you would not like your child to take part in the non-statutory elements of the curriculum. Please note, this only applies to year 6 as years 3 to 5 are only completing the statutory objectives.
